Define the hole-quality issue before selecting a remedy
Separate entry burrs, exit burrs, hole-wall condition and positional issues. Each observation should be recorded with its location and inspection method. A general description such as “poor holes” makes it difficult to compare trials.
Use a consistent inspection record
Compare photographs at the same magnification, lighting and stage of the process. Identify whether the observation was made immediately after drilling or after a later manufacturing step. Keep any board identifiers confidential if they are not needed for the discussion.
| Record | Details to include |
|---|---|
| Workpiece | Laminate grade, thickness, copper construction and stack. |
| Tool | Family, cutting diameter, flute length and condition at inspection. |
| Setup | Machine, collet, support and entry / backing arrangement. |
| Process | Current settings and changes made during the trial. |
| Inspection | Defect location, method, acceptance criteria and photographs. |
Review the complete drilling process
Tool condition is one possible factor. Board support, chip evacuation, equipment setup and material behaviour also belong in the investigation. Avoid presenting a single photograph or one changed parameter as proof of the cause.
Agree acceptance criteria before comparing tools
Ask the production or quality team to define the inspection method and acceptable result. Compare like-for-like samples using the same criteria. Record the limitations of the comparison alongside any improvement.
When to revisit the tool specification
Check the full dimensions and geometry if the tool reference is uncertain or the board stack has changed. Use the PCB drill selection checklist and the standard drill catalogue dimensions to prepare an accurate enquiry. For broken tools, the breakage checklist covers additional evidence to retain.
Questions about drilling burrs
Can a new drill eliminate every burr problem?
No single tool change can be assumed to resolve every issue. First compare the tool condition, setup, material and inspection evidence.
What information makes a supplier discussion more useful?
Send representative photographs together with the tool specification, board stack, machine conditions and a clear acceptance criterion.
Prepare a PCB tooling enquiry with these details so the first discussion is specific.
